ETFE roofs are often attractive in terms of aesthetics and lightness but not from the point of view of thermal performance. The case of the “Wintergarden” conference room of the Crowne Plaza hotel in Verona is emblematic. Maco Technology was apponted for the complete redesign of the envelope from the thermal point of view. The job included the replacement of the existing ETFE cushions with new three-layer pillows, including the external layer now with a silver coloured base. The design of the envelope was based on a detailed thermal and fluid dynamics analysis starting from the optical properties of the films used. The installed enclosure has a G factor of o.24 which ensures thermal comfort even on the hottest and sunniest days. The internal layer was printed with an aesthetic star pattern.
